Canam International taking part in the restoration of the Embassy of Canada in Haiti

The Canam International team has been mandated by Plano International Inc. to supply the steel components that will be used to rebuild the roof of the Embassy of Canada in Port-au-Prince, which was left heavily damaged in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Plano International specializes in the execution of commercial, institutional and residential construction projects in many regions and countries around the world.

Architecturally exposed Dywidag bars were used as bracing components between the ceiling and upper walls.

Various Canam products were used in the scope of this project, including structural steel components, steel deck as well as Goodco Z-Tech structural bearings. Building information modeling services (BIM) were produced by InteliBuild. Once completed, the roof will conserve the unique geometry of the original roof structure that resembles a maple leaf and will also feature a heliport.

Canam International's mandate also included the delivery of an aluminum stairway and Dywidag bars, which are steel bracing components that are particularly used to stabilize buildings in seismically active regions.

The various components were delivered by boat in three separate shipments using a 39-ft. (12 m) open shipping container. Shipments left from the Port of Montreal and took an average of three weeks to reach Port-au-Prince.
